Am I Doing Enough to Keep My Kid Safe Online?
You hand your child a phone so they can text you when they get home safe—but what else are they seeing on it?
It’s a question so many parents are asking these days:
“Am I doing enough to keep my kid safe online?”
From apps we’ve never heard of to group chats that spiral out of control, the digital world can feel like a minefield. And as our kids get older, the line between school, social life, and screen time gets blurrier by the day.
At Tutor Teach, student safety isn’t just a policy—it’s a foundational value.
Whether our instructors are sitting down face-to-face with students or working with them virtually, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and seen. But in today’s world, safety goes beyond classroom walls. It extends into the digital world where kids spend so much of their time—and that’s where things get a bit trickier.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Paul Davis, a Canadian expert on social media, cyber safety, and parenting in the digital age, on Season 1 of Tutor Teach’s Parenting Ed-Ventures podcast. If you haven’t had a chance to listen yet, go check it out here.
Paul has spoken to hundreds of thousands of students and parents across Canada, and his message is clear:
“The internet never forgets.”
It’s a simple sentence—but one with big weight.
Why Online Safety Matters at Tutor Teach
At Tutor Teach, we work with kids from all over Canada, with many students leaning into online support versus in-person support. That’s why we’ve expanded our student safety policy to include not just in-person guidelines, but digital ones too.
Kids are navigating social media, group chats, and classroom platforms—sometimes all in the same afternoon. It’s a lot to manage, especially when they don’t fully understand the risks.
Paul reminded us that even something as innocent as a funny comment or selfie can live forever online. That’s why we talk to our students about:
Digital footprints
Respectful communication
Safe tech habits
“You can’t outsource parenting to the internet,” Paul says. “We have to be present, ask questions, and show our kids we care about where they are online.”
How We Support Safety
Tutor Teach’s Student Safety Policy includes a few key things:
🛡 Guidelines for one-on-one online sessions
🛡 Support for families around internet use
🛡 A space where students feel comfortable talking about concerns—online or off
We also encourage open conversations at home. Paul talks about building digital trust with your child—not just locking down devices, but also explaining the why behind the boundaries.
“If your kid thinks you’re just trying to control them, you’ve already lost. But if they know you’re trying to protect them, they’ll listen.”
Raising Smart, Safe, & Confident Kids
At Tutor Teach, our goal is to help kids grow—not just academically, but emotionally, and socially, too.
That means preparing them for exams and for online interactions. It means celebrating progress and being there when something feels off. And it means bringing in experts like Paul Davis who remind us that the best way to protect our kids… is to stay connected to them.
