Facing Test Anxiety Head on

May 26, 20255 min read

For many students, the thought of an upcoming exam can elicit feelings of anxiety and worry–sweaty palms, racing thoughts, and sleepless nights are all too familiar. Test anxiety is real, and it impacts academic performance, confidence, and overall well-being. Frequently, test anxiety impedes academic potential. Heightened stress can lead to the debilitation of test-taking and retention skills by disrupting cognitive function, making it harder to focus and recall information.

Due to the challenging nature of exams and the adverse effects caused by unpreparedness and anxiety, it is imperative for students to learn the proper skills on how to minimize stress by finding a study plan that works for them, adapting anxiety management strategies and developing academic confidence.

Experiencing the anxiety that comes with an important exam, like the Provincial Achievement Test, a high school final exam, or even a driver’s learner exam, is a valuable part of a student’s growth. Test-taking helps build resilience, emotional regulation, and coping strategies that are essential for future challenges — both in school and beyond. Exams aren’t just a test of knowledge, but rather they serve as a learning opportunity, teaching students how to manage pressure, stay focused under stress, and develop confidence in their abilities.

Understanding Test Anxiety

Test anxiety is a psychological condition where individuals experience extreme levels of  stress, anxiety, and discomfort before, during or after an exam. The latter emotions can stem from fear of failure, lack of preparation, or past negative experiences. While a bit of nervous energy can motivate students to prepare, overwhelming anxiety can paralyze their overall performance.

Symptoms of test anxiety may include:

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Negative self-talk

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Panic attacks

  • Lack of motivation

Strategies to Manage Test Anxiety:

Active Recall:
Actively recalling information from memory during study sessions can help build stronger memory connections and make it easier to access information under pressure.

“Active recall is a learning method where you continuously test yourself by pulling information out of your memory instead of just passively reading notes.” Studies have shown (Rawson & Dunlosky, 2011; Roediger & Butler, 2011; Roediger, Putnam, & Smith, 2011) that it strengthens memory and helps move information into your long-term memory, making it one of the best methods for revision and studying.

Flashcards are a great way to use active recall as you’re testing yourself with a prompt or question and strengthening the connections in your brain.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques:
Studies have found that mindfulness interventions can help reduce test anxiety. For example, in one 2023 study, mindfulness practice helped 12 to 13-year-olds lower test anxiety and improve test achievement before a high-stakes math exam. Practicing mindfulness, deep breathing, or meditation can help calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Stress Management:
Engage in activities that help manage stress, such as exercise, hobbies, or games.

Positive Self-Talk:
Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations to boost confidence and reduce anxiety. According to Therapist Aid, positive self-talk during tests can significantly reduce anxiety by replacing negative thoughts with confidence-boosting statements. Examples include, "I'm prepared," "I can do this," and "I'll take it one question at a time."
